EDUCATION DAYS 2010

Career and Technology Education Day

Saturday, May 15
Friday, May 21
Monday, May 24
Wednesday, May 26
Thursday, May 27

Kennywood provides a perfect setting to test the knowledge learned in the classroom! We have had Education Day for 21 years, but this year we are branching into specific programs for the Career and Technical School curriculum with the assistance of A.W. Beattie Career Center. See below for the list of classes that will be available.

Advance reservation is required. Please call Jackie Mitko at 412-461-0500 x1244for more information or make a reservation online. Exact numbers are not needed until April. Cost for the day is TBD and teachers or chaperones get a free ticket for every 25 tickets ordered. Feel free to order extra tickets to cover last minute attendees. Tickets will be mailed in advance on consignment and extras may be returned for credit on CTE Day when payment is required.

If there are 50 or more interested, we can provide an All-You-Can-Eat buffet from noon - 2pm at a cost of $11 per person. Please make advanced reservations and prepay by May 4, 2009 with full refunds up to May 13. Click here to view the items included for the buffet.

Materials are available below to use for outing preparation in the classroom and should be brought to the park on CTE Day. Each curriculum area will have an assigned pavilion. Tours will be scheduled relating to your field followed by a Q & A period with a Kennywood representative to discuss our operation.

Course offerings include:

Advertising Design
Business
Carpentry and Building Construction
Culinary Arts
Horticulture (partnered with CCAC - South Campus)
Public Safety
Welding

Please have each course of study register separately with approximate number of students participating so tours can be properly established. Each tour will included approximately 20-25 participants. After all tours are complete, the group will meet with a Kennywood representative for a Q & A session in a designated pavilion.

Advertising Design
Students will work in advance to create an advertisement promoting the job opportunities at Kennywood. While at the park, groups will visit our Sign Shop and learn how signs are used in the park as informational resources as well as for safety purposes. Use your time in the park to also gather photographs to finish your design upon return to class.

Business
Students interested in business will take a tour of the stands and view a power point presentation to see how revenues are collected and appropriate bills and taxes are paid to determine profit levels. In preparation, students should think about income and expense sheets as they pertain to running a business.

Carpentry and Building Construction
Advance materials will explore several different styles of architecture and building construction. While at the park, students will visit the Carpenter Shop, view a coaster to see how it is built and repaired and look at safety issues throughout the park.

Culinary arts
While at the park, students will take a look at how food is stored, cooked, and served in various areas of the park. Food allergies are an important concern for many people and you will learn how we deal with these issues in food preparation. For advance study, students can work at developing a plan for a family restaurant at Kennywood.

Horticulture (Partnered with CCAC - South Campus)
Most people know how important flowers are at Kennywood. Learn how we develop and use plants and trees for decoration, shade, and "green space." The tour will explore how our gardening and grounds staff can plant, water, prune, and weed all our gardens BEFORE the gates open to the public.

Public Safety
Guests need to feel safe at Kennywood! Groups will examine how Kennywood's safety measures in the parking lot, ride areas, pavilions and main gate. See how we use metal detectors and uniform and plain clothes security officers to create a safe atmosphere for our guests.

welding
Steel coasters are the current trend at amusement parks and must be constructed, maintained and repaired. See how Kennywood plans and builds a coaster and keeps them maintained as they are used 10 hours a day, 7 days a week.
